During the summer of 2024, JVS Careers helped 25 local students unlock life-changing opportunities through its Cincy Internships program. Shoshi, a participant in the Workum Program, was able to explore the intersection of her interests in medicine, nonprofit work, the Jewish community, and her family legacy through her exciting internship with the Jewish Fertility Foundation (JFF).
During Shoshi’s time at JFF, she was deeply involved in supporting clients, assisting with the organization’s marketing efforts, building relationships with service providers, and conducting research. She was engaged in community-building initiatives, which allowed her to experience the multi-faceted work involved in nonprofit operations. Shoshi’s internship was integral to helping her build her professional resume and gave her a meaningful way to contribute to the community. “It was incredible. I got to learn a lot of new things; I got to see a lot of what nonprofit work is like and I got to make all these networking connections with both the medical field and also the Jewish world” said Shoshi. She was also able to immerse herself in the history of her family through the footsteps of her grandparents. Shoshi’s grandfather was the first physician to perform IVF in Cincinnati, while her grandmother practiced fertility law. “I was able to carry on a family legacy of sorts. I never knew my grandfather—he passed away when my mom was young—but it’s important to me to learn about him and what he accomplished,” Shoshi said. Her experience exemplifies the goals JVS Careers strives to achieve with every internship recipient: aligning professional aspirations with meaningful opportunities for growth and community impact.
JVS Careers offers a variety of specialized internship opportunities that empower Jewish college students to explore their interests, gain professional experience, and strengthen their ties to the Cincinnati Jewish community and beyond. “Cincinnati is so unique to have these opportunities available! We are the only community that offers the Birthright Israel Onward trip free of charge through the Cincy Journey’s grant. Additionally, to stay competitive and attract top talent, we recently raised Workum’s pay to $15 per hour for each intern” said Rachel Marchese, Director of Student Services at JVS Careers.
Birthright Israel Onward: This is an incredible eight-week summer internship in Tel Aviv, Israel, specifically for Cincinnati-based Jewish college students. Through the generous Cincy Journeys Grant, this program is offered free of charge, enabling students to gain international work experience in their fields of interest, immerse themselves in Israeli culture, and develop valuable professional skills.
Workum Internship Program: Workum offers prestigious, paid ($15/HR) eight-week internships (30 hours/week) at Cincinnati’s Jewish nonprofit agencies. Jewish college students gain hands-on experience, build their resumes, and make a local impact. Weekly professional development sessions provide skills and connections to support their future success
Careers Cincinnati: Careers Cincinnati connects students with paid internships across various industries and provides valuable networking opportunities with local industry leaders. Through partnerships with top organizations, students receive not only practical work experience but also build long-term relationships within the Cincinnati community.
JVS Careers ensures that students are supported every step of the way. In addition to guidance from Rachel Marchese, interns have access to JVS Careers’ professional coaches, who assist with resume preparation, interview skills, and networking to help students make the most of their internships.
“Each year, I’m inspired by the talent and dedication of our interns and the impact they make within our local Jewish community and beyond,” Rachel said.
